Engaging Congress

Tips & Tricks

Letter Writing Campaigns

Letter Writing 101:

  • Make specific requests of them - asking them to take a particular action (support/ oppose) an issue or a bill, cosponsor a bill, or to take leadership on an action.

  • Use personal experience or expertise. If you dont have these, explain why the issue is relevant to their constituents/State.

  • Thank/Express concern. Show that you are paying attention to them specifically so there is accountability.

    • Thank them for past actions. If applicable, say thank you if they have supported in the past (they are looking to make sure the issues they champion have traction with their constituents).

    • Express concern for their stance if it is negative. [Perhap counter one or more of their statements if they are hollow talking points]

    • If they are undecided/silent, tell them you need them to take a lead and you want them to clearly articulate their stance in a response letter] [perhaps take a WH Report critique and counter it as an example of how these arent genuine]

Bonus Points: Following Up: Please feel free to use one of our forms but it will be very effective if you write your own taking these points into account. For ways to maximize the impact, please consider these tips:

  • If writing your reps in the House, also consider physically mailing with a return address as Congress considers this more personal (they old).

  • Follow ups.

  • +1 - Making a call to their office to make sure they got your letter.

  • +1 - Ask for a meeting (in person for maximum impact) or at least a call to discuss your concerns with you.

Please personalize one of the form letters or draft your own. Remember to include asking for them to take specific steps and find your representatives in these lists (they will ignore letters that are not from their constituents):

Instructions:

Please reach out to your rep with our letter or ours. Our representatives need to hear our voices on the recent actions against crypto and we want them to hear loudly and clearly that they represent us and we do not support their attacks.
